So you Wanna be a Pilot? Here are a few points that you should consider Buzz Flying Ltd is the flight training organization recognized by Island Microlight Club. We promote this exciting aviation sport in Malta and provide A to Z instruction leading to a UK Civil Aviation Authority National Private Pilot's License rated for microlights - NPPL(M). All flying is carried out locally on dual control aircraft thus enabling student pilots to progress at their own pace and ability, safely and competently. What are Microlights? Microlights are one or two-seat aeroplanes whose maximum take-off weight does not exceed 450 kg. Modern microlights offer superb performance, comfort and above all have a safety record second to none in aviation. Flying microlights is challenging, exhilarating and brilliant fun! Microlight aircraft may be either a weight-shift or a three-axis type. Where can I fly once I have obtained my licence? Contrary to light aviation, microlight flying is both cheap and easy. Why spend so much on any other license when with the same amount of money spent you can get your license and own your own microlight! Also, microlights do not require conventional airfields. They can operate legally from grass strips or fields with just the permission of the land owner and the director of Civil Aviation. Avoid unnecessary delays at airport gates and at flight planning. Just hop in and fly! You can keep on flying on club aircraft, form a syndicate or better still buy your own microlight. By the way, have we mentioned that you may maintain your own aircraft at a cost less than an average family car! What do I need to start? Nothing, except for a routine medical check at your general practitioner, a personal insurance policy (you may have one already) and compilation of the clubs application form. Also you must be at least 16. Simple isnt it? What happens if I dont like it? Impossible! However the Club offers trial flights for people who are seriously thinking of enjoying the sport and/or buying a microlight aircraft of any sort. This includes a full insight of the subjects and various types of aircraft available on the market, so as to help you decided what is most suitable according to your needs. What does the course consist of? The course consists of ground and flight training. The syllabus is very flexible in order to cater for the needs of the many students with different backgrounds and jobs involved. Ground studies involve about fourteen different subjects which include meteorology, air law and navigation at the end of which is a simple examination. Flight training depends on the type of license you are after. There are two types and they are distinguished by the extent of flying qualifications required on microlight aircraft. These are restricted and unrestricted. What do you mean by types of licence? Okay, okay... Let's tackle them separately. Restricted requires 15 hours flying instruction of which 7 must be solo (solo means you will be flying the aircraft on your own). The solo must be completed at your own discretion within the 9 month period prior to applying for the license. It also requires that you pass a General Flight Test set by an authorised instructor holding an Examiner X rating within the 9 month period prior to applying for the license. There are limitations imposed on a restricted license holder and this means you can fly if: 1. The surface wind is less than 15 knots 2. There is no cloud below 1000 feet above the ground 3. The visibility is 5 nautical miles or more 4. You remain within 8 nautical miles of the take-off site. 5. You must not carry passengers until you have logged 25 hours flight time, 10 hours of which must have been as pilot in command and your Log Book has been endorsed by the Examiner as to your fitness to do so. Unrestricted requires that you hold an NPPL rated for microlights (in other words the Restricted stuff above) plus: a. Obtain a further 10 hours flying time out of which at least 5 hours must be on instruction in navigation training. b. The navigation training must include two solo cross-country flights of at least 40 nautical miles each c. During the cross-country flight an out-landing must be made at a site at least 15 NM from your take-off point. |
